Once upon a time little boys were dressed in blue and little girls in pink. So when you looked into the pram to ooh and coo over the newborn, that was your gender guide to the right compliments: ‘Isn’t she pretty?’‘What a gorgeous little boy,’ and so on. But now all that has changed.Baby clothes have taken a mighty leap into the twenty first century to create a new generation of trendy babies and toddlers.
There are some really innovative new designers who have got to grips with environmental issues and combined style with eco-friendly botanical textiles. Highly sustainable plants like soy and bamboo are being used to create fabrics that are soft, light and durable, lending themselves perfectly to new prints and designs in baby and toddler clothing.
Babysoy is one such company. It uses fair-trade soybean protein fibres that are silky-soft and thermo-regulating as well as both hypo-allergenic and anti-bacterial. This is ideal for babywear because the breathable fabric will keep babies at the right temperature as well as being absolutely safe and soft for their delicate skin.
As if all this isn’t already too good to be true, Babysoy’s designs are truly stunning. I love the beautiful little romper suits and award-winning reversible unisex hoodies and am not surprised the trendy celebs dress their designer babies in this clothing range. The soft, pull-on trousers are a wardrobe essential for any toddler.
The delightfully-named Aravore is another fair trade, ethical clothing brand. The name means ‘piece of heaven’ and your baby or toddler will adore the softness of this textile made from a blend of organic cotton and merino wool. The delicate pastels, silvery sheens and sun-kissed sand colours seem to have been created to compliment the pretty jumpers and floaty, Boho dresses in this range.
Boys, they say, will be boys and possibly my favourite range for energetic little adventurers is Bamboo Baby. Again these gorgeous designs have been created from eco-friendly textiles, as bamboo is totally organic and sustainable. I loved the bamboo denim jeans with the bright red arrow across the back pockets and teamed them up with a bright, striped rugby top and summer cardigan. This is definitely my son’s favourite outfit.
Although I wasn’t looking for sleepwear at the time, the lovely nightwear range from Mini Vanilla really caught my eye. Starting with newborn gift sets, their sleepwear range goes up to age 3 and includes some of the cutest designs I have ever seen. They use very soft, breathable cotton for ultimate comfort whatever the temperature outside.
The old days of traipsing wearily around the high street shops looking for the right children’s clothing are a thing of the past, thanks to the internet. I could never have made so many exciting new discoveries ten years ago and I applaud these enterprising new companies for making shopping so much easier and more pleasurable, thanks to their environmentally friendly and affordable design ideas.
