Believe it or not, a squirrel (or several squirrels) in the attic is one of the most common problems in the United States. Squirrels are clever, opportunistic little critters. The fact that they have become so accustomed to living around humans on a daily basis probably doesn’t help. To a squirrel, your attic is just another tree hollow for raising young and seeking shelter from the elements.

But you can’t say that you’re as comfortable with the living arrangements. Loud scratching, biting, and the sound of rolling nuts is enough to annoy you throughout the day (good thing squirrels are not nocturnal). Squirrels can also cause some real problems if they start chewing on your walls, insulation, or wiring. It would be easy for a squirrel to chew a faulty wire and accidentally cause an electrical fire.

Gray squirrels are the most common offenders, though red squirrels, flying squirrels, and other species are more than capable of nesting in your attic.

But how do you get all of them out?

Prevention

Keeping them out of your house in the first place is a great first step to avoiding squirrels in the attic. Make sure you check the outside of your home regularly for any cracks or holes that a squirrel might be able to fit through. Patching those holes up could keep those furry scoundrels out of your home.

Removal

If you really must get the squirrel out of the home, you could call any nearby Massachusetts exterminators to take care of the problem, but there are humane ways to get rid of those squirrels.

Traps are quite effective if you only have one or two squirrels in your home. You can catch the squirrels and transport them somewhere safe and away from your home.

The issue is complicated when you have a whole family of squirrels, especially if it’s a mother with her newborns. You can potentially use traps, but it will be a long process that has a large potential for error. Most professionals will use a one-way door exclusion method.

Though there are ways to handle this on your own, Massachusetts squirrel removal is not a do-it-yourself project. There’s no shame in seeking professional help from Massachusetts pest control.

Furthermore, remember that, after your squirrels are gone, your attic could use a good cleaning. Who knows what presents they might have left up there?
