Maharashtra is one of the most developed states in India. It is developed commercially, industrially as well as economically. The education system of Maharashtra is quiet high in terms of its standard. As it provide students a large number of colleges offering a variety of courses to pursue. The state ranks as third in terms of area with a total number of 35 districts. The literacy rate of Maharashtra as per the 2001 census was at 77.27% in which male literacy rate being at 86.27 and females at 67.51%. Pune is ranked as the best destination for education in the nation and the other districts of Maharashtra which are well-known for their education system are, Mumbai, Nagpur, Kolhapur, Aurangabad and Ahmednagar.

The colleges in Maharashtra are raised in mostly every part of the state, whether small or large, these colleges have something or the other to offer to their students, whether in the field arts, science, commerce, medical or journalism. These colleges are run either by the state or central government and most of them are under private sector. These colleges offer both graduate and post-graduate programs. Professional courses like management, engineering, etc are also offered here. With degree courses there are also diploma and certificate courses in these colleges.

The plus point of the colleges of Maharashta is that along with good education they also provide students with good infrastructure and facility of hostels. These colleges of Maharashtra are afilliated to the top universities of the state such as, Dr. Babasaheb Ambedkar Marathwada University, Shivaji University, North Maharashtra University, Sant Gadge Baba Amravati University, etc.

The attempt of the Government is to make education in Maharashtra colleges such that the people who belong to the weaker section of the society can also afford to study in these colleges. There are total 33 universities in the state with 116 Medical Colleges, 117 Engineering Colleges, 1208 Arts and Science Colleges and so on.
